In June of 1972, Miles Davis entered Columbia's 52nd St. Studios to record music that was eventually released as On The Corner and part of Big Fun - stuff that was so far out and future perfect, it was its own genre. The world finally caught up. Now fans can experience The Complete On The Corner Sessions, a collection of over 6 1/2 hours of music covering Miles' studio recordings from '72 to '75, whose reputation precedes it and retains the signature spirit of an artist ever-changing.

Featuring musicians including Miles' then working rhythm section of Michael Henderson, Al Foster and Mtume, saxophonists Dave Liebman, Sonny Fortune and Carlos Garnett, keyboardists Herbie Hancock and Chick Corea, guitarists John McLaughlin, Reggie Lucas and Pete Cosey, drummers Jack DeJohnette and Billy Hart, percussionists Badal Roy and Don Alias, and more - this is freestyle, improvisational funk over a jazz backdrop for a feel so solid, so radical and electrifying, that at the time it sent shock waves through the jazz establishment. Meanwhile, Miles and his band in its various incarnations were selling out stadiums worldwide!

FIND OUT WHY. The Complete On The Corner Sessions includes over 2 hours of previously unreleased material, plus 5 tracks available for the first time in unedited form. As a bandleader, bringing in influences as diverse as funk, R&B, jazz, world, rock and 20th century classical music - a place where Afro and Indo and Stockhausen and Sly Stone and Hendrix and James Brown were one nation under a groove - Miles was breaking down boundaries and creating a music whose elements could be extracted for any musical genre, and in turn influenced a whole new generation of artists. This innovation of style, in concert with producer Teo Macero's creative editing technique, laid the foundation and informed whole new genres... drum & bass, hip hop, electronica.

Inside, read extensive liner notes from arranger/composer Paul Buckmaster, music journalist Tom Terrell, and multi-Grammy® winner Bob Belden, plus dozens of rare photos of the musicians. This last set in the "metal spine" series documenting Miles' career, chronologically, as bandleader - agent provocateur - is the ultimate in electric funk-rock jazz taken to a whole other level.

“The new [Bitches Brew] reissues, due Aug. 31 from Columbia/Legacy are packed with extras ... Also included is a DVD of a previously unreleased concert performance by the Miles Davis Quintet from November 1969 … plus a CD of a previously unreleased Davis concert performance from August 1970. ’It’s killer,’ Wilburn says. ‘That was one of my favorite bands anyway. People should see this; it changed the course of music.’”

Bitches Brew totters at the peak of Miles’ creative output, along with 'Live Evil' and 'A Tribute to Jack Johnson' a year later. He had a few good albums, even a Grammy winner ('Tutu')—but nothing as groundbreaking as this set. But this one’s definitely a keeper. It could keep you happy for years.”

“The crown jewel to both [Bitches Brew] packages, though, has to be the color DVD … The magical interludes to this 69-minute show include uptempo, straight-ahead swing with ‘Agitation,’ very lyrical playing from Davis on ‘I Fall In Love Too Easily’ into very experimental reworkings of ‘Sanctuary’ and ‘It’s About That Time”… Intense, fiery Davis plays across it all, with incredible, explosive drumming from DeJohnette – on and off camera!”

Ratings: 10 out of 10. "In short, Miles Davis’s Kind of Blue is that rarest thing in art: a work that is as popular as it is critically acclaimed, at once revolutionary and easy to enjoy."

"Columbia/Legacy's splendid "Kind of Blue: 50th Anniversary Collector's Edition" is so lovingly stocked with priceless artifacts and constructed with such painstaking reverence that it's more like a sacred object than a luxury box set. ... "Kind of Blue" is a collective, mosaic masterwork, with each artist's contribution fitting in seamlessly, generating synergy at its sensuously sinful, energetic best."

After 50 years, 'Kind of Blue' is still a classic. And Miles lives. In the 50 years since its release, "Kind of Blue" has come to be regarded as a landmark, the pinnacle not only of Davis' output but perhaps of jazz itself. It's almost certainly the best-selling jazz album of all time, and it has a place in the record collection of many a listener who would otherwise profess to a dislike of jazz.”

Must-have reissue: MILES DAVIS: Kind of Blue – 50th Anniversary Collector’s Edition (Sony). This celebration is a handsome, everything-but-the-kitchen sink effort, combining an LP and two CDs that include evocative studio out-takes and 1958 material by the same hallowed line-up.”
